Antibiotic Drugs Flashcards
Also known as prokaryotes which are single-celled organisms that lack a true nucleus and nuclear membrane.
Bacteria
How do we differentiate Antiseptic from Disinfectants?
Antiseptics is used to kill bacteria, inhibits the growth of bacteria while Disinfectants are for cleaning surfaces.
It kills the microorganism.
Bactericidal
It is not given in 1st trimester or in pregnant women because it can kill the baby.
Ribavirin
This antibiotic should be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water to allow maximum absorption.
Tetracycline
Most common medication for leptospirosis.
Doxycycline or Vibramycin
A retrovirus which attaches to a host cell in order to replicate.
HIV
Chemicals that kill or suppress virus by either destroying virions or inhibiting their ability to replicate.
Antiviral drugs
Give at least three (3) goals of HAART.
- Decrease viral load to undetectable levels
- Preserve and increase number of CD4+ T cells
- Prevent resistance
This drug is contraindicated for clients who have a severe history of allergies.
Penicillin
5 Mechanisms of Antibacterial Action
- Inhibition of bacterial cell-wall synthesis – they destroy bacterial cell-wall
- Alteration of membrane permeability – destroy the concentration inside the cytoplasm
- Inhibition of protein synthesis – which halves the metabolism
- Inhibition of the synthesis of bacterial RNA and DNA – it will stop the multiplication
- Interference with metabolism within the cell – it can be the folic acid of bacteria
This spectrum is primarily effective against one type of organism (selective).
Narrow Spectrum
This kind of spectrum is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.
Broad Spectrum
This occurs when antibiotic therapy disturbed the normal microbial flora of the body.
Superinfection
A drug that is known to be the best drug that could kill microorganisms through various studies, experience, and evidence-based practice.
Empiric therapy
An enzyme that produces by bacteria gives them resistance to the drug.
Beta-lactamase
A sign of nephritis or nephrosis.
Cloudy urine
Term used to described fungal infection.
Mycosis
Transmitted through bite of an infected female
anopheles mosquito which is endemic in the
Philippines.
Malaria
Most common, present as a pulmonary disease.
