Antibacterial agents Flashcards
Any compound natural, synthetic or semi synthetic that is clinically useful in the treatment of bacterial infection
Antibacterial
Agents that inhibit bacterial growth
Bacteriostatic
Agents that generally kill only growing organism
Bactericidal
Preferrentially active against either Gram negative or Gram positive
Narrow spectrum
Is active against both Gram negative and Gram positive
Broad spectrum
Discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1920
Penicillin
Antibiotic of choice for infections caused by methicillin staphylococci and penicillinase producing enterococci
Vancomycin
Similar to dihydrofollic acid is bound by dihydrofolate reductase
Trimetropin
Classification of antibacterial agents
- inhibit cell wall
- inhibit nucleotide synthesis
- inhibit nucleic acid synthesis
- inhbits protein synthesis
Mechanism of drug resistance(strategy)
- pathogen prevents entry of the drug
- Presence of membrane translocases that pumps drug out of the cell.
“efflux pumps” - Drug inactivation through chemical modification
ex. Hydrolysis
Substance produced by microorganisms that in minute quantities is able to inhibit other microorganisms
