Benzodiazepines, barbiturates, buspirone
Benzodiazepines
Meds that act fast but are addictive. Used to treat anxiety by sedating you. Take at night and taper off slowly
What are some drugs for benzodiazepines
Chlrorodiazepoxide, meds ending in “Lam” and “Pam”
What are barbiturates
Large sedation resulting in a high death rate. Be very careful using these
What are meds with barbiturates
Meds ending in “Tal” Mal”
Busperone
Meds used to treat everyday anxiety. Not an as needed drug. Low withdrawal and hardly any side effects
What are the classes of antidepressants
SSRI, SNRI, TCA, MAOI
What are some drugs of SSRI’s
Paroxetine, Fluoxetine
Paroxetine
Most sedating, short half life. May affect GI system
Fluoxetine
Long half life. Don’t use in elderly
SNRI
Used to help treat depression and myalgia
Meds of SNRI
Duloxetine
TCA
Used in patients with clinical depression
What are some meds for TCAs
Amitriptyline, Imipramine
What are some affects of amitriptyline
Orthostatic hypotension, pee retention
