Antiandrogens, Treatment of Prostate Cancer Flashcards
What is meant when people say “deferred therapy” for prostate cancer
“Watchful waiting” either for the person to develop sx from their local tumor, or for metastasis. This is controversial now because studies show that aggressive early treatment can significantly extend life
What is flutamide and what is it used for?
It is a non-steroidal androgen receptor antagonist. It is used to treat metastatic prostate cancer (that’s gonna be the trend this whole deck if you didn’t already guess)
Whats the major side effect of flutamide?
Diarrhea
What is bicalutamide and what does it treat?
A newer non-steroidal androgen receptor antagonist that also treats metastatic prostate cancer. Studies suggests its better than flutamide at treating prostate cancer and not causing diarrhea. Double win.
What is enzalutamide and what does it treat?
Is a new non-steroidal androgen receptor antagonist that has a 5x stronger affinity for the androgen receptor than bicalutamide. It is used to treat metastatic prostate cancer in pts that are castration resistant that have previously received docetaxel
What is leuprolide and what does it treat?
It is a GnRH agonist and that with long term use can decrease concentrations of FSH and LH (I personally don’t really understand how that happens). Treats prostate cancer.
What is goserelin and what does it treat?
It is a GnRH agonist and that with long term use can decrease concentrations of FSH and LH (I personally don’t really understand how that happens). Treats prostate cancer.
What is abarelix and what does it treat?
It is a GnRH antagonist that inhibits LH and FSH release and inhibits testosterone production without causing the flare that is seen with GnRH agonists. Treats prostate cancer.
What is abiraterone acetate and what does it treat
It is a CYP17 inhibitor, which means it inhibits androgen biosynthesis. It is used to treat metastatic, castration resistant prostate cancer
