Anti-virals Flashcards

1
Q

What is the mechanism of action of acyclovir?

A

Acyclovir is a acyclic guanine nucleoside analogue that once phosphorylated, stops replication of viral DNA in 3 ways:

  1. Competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase
  2. Inactivates viral DNA polymerase
  3. Is incorporated into the viral DNA chain, preventing the elongation of the viral DNA chain

Q

What is the mechanism of action of ganciclovir?

A

Ganciclovir is a acyclic guanine nucleoside analogue that once phosphorylated, stops replication of viral DNA in 3 ways:

  1. Preferentially inhibits viral DNA polymerase
  2. Inactivates viral DNA polymerase
  3. Is incorporated into the viral DNA chain, preventing the elongation of the viral DNA chain
