Anti-viral meds Flashcards
1
Q
The two main anti-herpes drugs
-Similarities and differences
A
- Acyclovir
- Ganciclovir
- Both are guanine analogues
- acyclovir must be phosphorylated first by a virus specific thymidine kinase
2
Q
What is ganciclovir used to treat and why
A
Cytomegalovirus, since CMV lacks thymidine kinase, making acyclovir not active
3
Q
Main site of action of anti-viral drugs
A
most are nucleotide analogues - look like viral nucleotides and inhibit DNA polymerase or reverse transcriptase
4
Q
Foscarnet: Mechanism, usage
A
- pyrophsophate analogue, inhibits DNA polymerase and reverse transcriptase
- CMV retinitis, ayclovir-resistant strains of herpes
5
Q
Zidovudine
A
Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor
6
Q
Neuraminidiase inhibitors
A
used against influenza A and B
- oseltamivir
- zanamivir
- peramivir
