Anti-Thrombotic Drugs. Flashcards
What are the effects of aspirin
Non selective COX inhibitor
Decrease TXA2 —> decreased activation of the GP IIb/IIIa receptor —> irreversible inhibition of platelet aggregation.
Also decreases vasoconstriction
What is one indication or aspirin usage
Prevention of feline ATE
What is the mechanism of action of clopidogrel
Class : thienopyridine anti-platelet agent.
P2Y12 receptor blocker (ADP receptor) —> decrease fibrinogen and vWF binding.
Descreases vasoconstriction
What are the indications of clopidogrel
Prevention of feline ATE
What are the side effects for clopidogrel vs aspirin
Aspirin : GI bleed
Clopidogrel : decrease appetite, vomiting and diarrhea —> rare, usually well tolerated.
Based on the FAT cat study, that medication should be prioritize to decrease recurrence of thromboembolism in cats and increase survival time.
Clopidogrel administration significantly reduces the likelihood of recurrent ATE compared with aspirin in cats.
What is the mechanism of heparin
Normally occurring glycosaminoglycan
Increases antithrombin III activity
Inactivation of factor II, IX and Xa*
What is the difference between unfractionated heparin and low molecular weight heparin.
LMWH —> more predicatable pharmacokinetic and lower risk of bleeding since does not affects thrombin
What are the indication of heparin usage
Treatment and prevention of feline ATE
What are the side effects of heparin
Bleeding —> less risk with LMWH
Monitor PTT
What is the mechanism of action of rivaroxaban
Selectively and reversible block the activity of clotting factor Xa
What are the indication of anti-thrombotic
Treatment and prevention of feline aortic thrombosis.
Reduce complication in association with treatment of heart worm disease in dogs.
IMHA
Systemic thrombosis
