Anti Social Flashcards
People can act in a more anti social way due to
Social learning
Cognitive priming
Desensitisation
Social learning
Social learning involves learning by observation and imitation of models. People are likely to imitate models that they admire, that they see as successful and that receive reinforcement for their actions
Support for social learning
Bandura bobo doll
Children who watched adults abuse doll - hit the doll
Shows that children do copy violent behaviour
Problems with social learning support study
Can’t generalise to adults
Children may have felt they were expected to act that way
Ethics
Criticising study of social learning
St Helena received television for the first time in 1995. Researchers found that very little changed in the post television period and even discovered some increases in pro social behaviour on some behavioural measures
Cognitive priming
Aggressive ideas shown in media can spark off existing aggressive thoughts. After viewing a violent film the viewer is primed to respond aggressively. Viewers may store scripts in their memories and use them at a later date
Support for cognitive priming
Josephson conducted an experiment when hockey players were deliberately frustrated. They were then shown a violent or non violent film and the actor held a walkie talkie. Plays who had seen the violent film behaved more aggressively when the referee held a walkie talkie when they later played a game of hockey
Desensitisation
The more violence a child watches, the more desensitised they become and therefore the more likely they are to become violent
Criticism of desensitisation
Belson conducted a study of 1500 teenage boys and found no evidence that high exposure to TV violence would desensitise them into becoming more violent
Support for desensitisation
Huesmann and Moise reported that boys who watch TV frequently show lower physiological arousal in response to NEW violent scenes so may be more inclined to use violence
WEAKNESSES OF ANTI SOCIAL RESEARCH
- gender bias
- correlational
- ethics
