Prophylactic treatment for Malaria
A
Chloroquine in countries not resistant
- M.O.A - blocks plasmodium heme polymerase, which causes heme to accumulate, which is toxic to the parasite
Mefloquine, atovaquone or proguanil in countries resistant to chloroquine

Treatment of;
- Plasmodium falciparum
- Plasmodium Vivax and Ovale
- Plasmodium Malariae
- What drugs do you give IV in a life-threatening situation?
A
- P. Falciparum - chloroquine if not resistant. Mefloquine, atovaquone or proguanil if resistant
- P. Vivax and Ovale - Chloroquine + Primaquine to kill dormant in the liver
- P. Malariae - Chloroquine
In a life-threatening situation - give IV quinine + doxycycline
