Aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)

Ix:
- mild to moderate pain
- fever
- inflammation (arthritis, sprains)
- Heart attack and stroke prevention
CT:
- Stomach upset - possible bleed/ulceration
- take with food/milk
- do not give to children <18 y.o. due to risk of Reye’s Syndrome
- Ringing in ears with high dose
Ibuprofen
(OTC: Advil, Motrin IB)
(Rx: Motrin)
Ix:
- Mild to moderate pain
- Fever
- Inflammation
CT:
- Stomach upset (possible bleed/ulceration)
- take with food/milk
- Avoid if history of heart problems
Naproxen sodium
(OTC: Aleve)
(Rx: Anaprox, Anaprox DS)
Ix:
- Mild to moderate pain
- Fever
- Inflammation
CT:
- Stomach upset (possible bleed/ulceration)
- take with food/milk
- Avoid if history of heart problems
Meloxicam (Mobic)
Ix:
- Moderate to severe pain in adults, typically adjunct therapy with other analgesics
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
CT:
- Stomach upset (possible bleed/ulceration)
- take with food/milk
- Avoid if history of heart problems
Methylprednisolone (Medrol)
Ix:
- Inflammation
- Asthma exacerbations
- Poison Ivy
CT:
- Finish entire course
- Take with food or milk to avoid stomach upset
- Take earlier in the day to avoid insomnia
Hydrocortisone (Ala-cort, anucort-HC, Instacort 5)
Ix:
- Topical rash and itching (external)
- Inflammation
- Hemorrhoids (rectal)
CT:
- Localized burning
Acetaminophen (APAP)
(Tylenol)
Ix:
- Mild to moderate pain
- Fever
CT:
- APAP in many OTC and Rx combo products
- Do not treat hangovers with APAP due to liver toxicity
Tramadol (C-IV)
(Ultram)
Ix:
- Moderate pain
CT:
- Constipation
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Hydrocodone/APAP (C-II)
(Norco, Vicodin, Lortab)
Ix:
- Moderate to severe pain
CT:
- Stomach upset

- Drowsiness
