anti-inflammatories Flashcards

1
Q

Name some products of the COX pathway, describe differences between COX1 and COX2.

A
  • COX = membrane protein with enzyme sites
  • produces inflammatory mediators - prostaglandins and thromboxanes
  • COX1
    • constant prostaglandin production, homeostasis
  • COX2
    • inducible enzyme in response to injury and inflammation

Q

Name several NSAIDS, their mechanism of action and uses

A

NSAIDS:
- ASPIRIN
- binds to Ser residue in COX preventing arachadonic acid from reaching COX site
- anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain), antipyretic (temp)
- IBUPROFEN
- non-selective, reversible inhibition of the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2
- NAPROXEN
- nonselective inhibitor of COX-1 and COX-2

Q

what are NSAIDS

A

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medicines that are widely used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and bring down a high temperature
= inhibit COX1 and COX2
