Discovered in the late 1950s these drugs effectively treat depression, GAD and panic disorder but are less likely to be used than newer generation medications.
Tricyclic Anti-Depressants or TCA’s
The most prescribed anti-depressant class.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs
Main concerns with this type of drug are dietary and drug-drug interactions.
MAOIs
All of the following are side effects of SSRIs except:
Orthostatic hypotension; Insomnia; Anorexia; or Nausea.

This drug is the only marketed aminoketone anti-depressant and is FDA-approved for smoking cessation and treating addictions
Bupropion or Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin XL, Wellbutrin SR, or Zyban
Sometimes used for addictions, chronic pain, anxiety disorders, this drug is FDA approved for GAD, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder.
