What is cultural relativism?
The understanding that we do not hold the only perspective and recognizing other cultures from a point of view that acknowledges them as a fully formed culture
and Understanding another culture in its own terms sympathetically enough so that the culture appears to be a coherent and meaningful design for living
What is Holism?
the need to observe people as the sum of their parts, all elements together to create a full picture.
Objects and environments interpenetrate and define each other. Human nature as the result of co-evolution between biological and cultural processes.
what is cross cultural comparison/ethnology?
Consider similarities and differences in a wide range of human societies before generalizing about human nature, human society, or human history.
difference between cultural relativism vs ethnocentrism
cultural relativism: viewing other societies customs and idea within the context of that societies problems and opportunities, allow us to improve our understanding of controversial cultural practices
Ethnocentrism: judging other societies customs and ideas in context of ones own culture, reductionist.
