Anterior and Medial Thigh Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a contusions
Bleeding from ruptured capillaries where blood goes into the muscle.
What is ischemia?
inadequate blood supply to an area.
What is “Charley horse”?
- cramping of thigh muscle because of ischemia /contusion -results in hematoma due to tearing fibers of rectus femurs m.
- most common site of hematoma is the quadriceps.
what are symptoms of Charley horse?
localized pain and muscle stiffness.
What is a psoas abscess?
a retro-peritoneal pyogenic infection in the abdomen or greater pelvis
What two diseases cause a psoas abscess?
- TB in the vertebral column
2. Regional enteritis of the Ileum (celiacs)
What is the clinical presentation of a psoas abscess?
- edema in the proximal part of the thigh superior and inferior to the inguinal ligament
- pain to hip thigh or knee joint
What is clinical presentation of paralysis of quadriceps?
- can not extend the LEG against resistance
- presses distal end of the thigh during walking to prevent inadvertent flexion of the knee joint (otherwise they’d have to extend it back…)
What causes abnormal patellar movement and loss of knee joint stability?
- weakness of Vastus Medialis M. and Vastus Lateralis M.
- from arthritis or trauma to the knee joint
What is runner’s knee?
-chondromalasia patellae; common for marathon runners, basketball players, weight lifters
What three things cause chondromalacia patellae?
- quadricep imbalance
- blow to the patella
- extreme flexion of the knee (during squatting when powerlifting)
What is the meaning of malacia?
abnormal softening of a biological tissue, most often cartilage
What two things cause patellar fractures?
- blow to patella
2. sudden contraction of the quadriceps mm. in an attempt to prevent falling backward
What happens during patellar fractures?
- proximal fragment of the patella gets pulled by the quadriceps
- distal fragment remains with the patellar ligament
When does the patella ossify?
3-6 years old, from more than 1 ossification center
