Qualitative pregnancy test (urine)
Will be positive or negative.
Used OTC and in health care settings
Semiquantitative pregnancy test (urine)
Reported in categories of units based on amount of hormone present, available outside the U.S.
Quantitative (serum)
Reported in units, available in healthcare settings; used to diagnose pregnancy and monitor progress
Presumptive signs of pregnancy
Subjective s/s woman experiences- nausea, breast changes, amenorrhea, skin changes, fatigue, fetal movement, etc.
Probable signs of pregnancy
Maternal physiologic/anatomic changes healthcare provider can observe on exam - enlargement of abdomen, vaginal changes, basal body temperature elevation, endocrine pregnancy test
Positive sign of pregnancy
Diagnostic of pregnancy - US or xray of fetus, ID of fetal heart activity, detection of fetal movement by examiner
Location of uterine fundus during pregnancy 12 weeks 16 weeks 20 weeks 28 weeks 36 weeks
12 weeks - @ symphysis pubis
16 weeks - 1/2 way between symphysis pubis and umbilicus
20 weeks - at umbilicus
28 weeks - 1/2 way between umbilicus and xiphisternum
36 weeks - at xiphisternum
Risk factors associated w/ higher perinatal risk
- lack of access to resources i.e. prenatal care
- high risk ethnic groups (AA)
- Smoking or other substance use
- Poor diet, no exercise
- Environmental/pollutants, chemical exposure, long work hours, prolonged standing/lifting
- VBAC, overuse of C-section, previous loss/complication
- BMI >35
- Family hx of NTD or other anomalies
- Chronic diseases
- PMH of cancer
- Mental health disorders
Genetic screenings offered
- 1st prenatal visit includes comprehensive family history (including PMH, FHx, pregnancy outcomes on 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree relatives)
- 1st trimester screen done 11-13 weeks, and includes nuchal translucency measurements by US and maternal serum measurements of free or total beta-hcg and PAPP-A
- Quad screen offered 15-20 weeks
