What is antenna?
A device that radiates electromagnetic waves and/or captures them from space.
What are the three main components of an antenna system>
- Coupling device (Coupler)
- A feeder (a transmission line)
- Radiating Elements
What is a Radiating Element?
Actual metallic component that radiates electromagnetic energy
Used for radio transmission and reception
What is coupler?
Matches impedance of the transmissions line to the radiating elements
What are transmission lines?
usually a wire or cable
transports electromagnetic energy from the transmitter to the antenna
-Balanced or unbalanced
What is a balanced transmission line?
Two or more conductors of equal conductance
One transmits signal
Other is reference/ground
What is an unbalanced transmission line?
One primary conductor
Second conductor much lower conductance or absent
COAX Cable
What is a BALUN?
A device to convert between unbalanced transmissions line and balanced antenna radiating elements
