Folic acid 400mcg up to 12 weeks and before pregnancy
Vit d supplement 10 mcg or 400 IU daily
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Avoid unpasteurised dairy due to risk of listeria
Avoid undercooked or raw poultry due to risk of salmonella

How do you screen for downs

A

Combined test is first line and most accurate
Done between 11 and 14 weeks
Results fri, ultrasound and maternal blood tests
USS nuchal transulcency which is the thickness of the back of neck
Maternal blood test - bHCG and PAPPA

How do you actually test for downs

A

Screening gives risk score and when risk is greater than 1 in 150
Do amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling
Chronic villus sampling is USS guided sample of placenta - before 15 weeks
Amniocentesis - USS guided aspiration of amniotic fluid - later in pregnancy as needs to be enough amniotic fluid
