if transmission does occur in early pregnancy then the risk of congenital abnormality to the fetus is higher than if transmission occurs later in pregnancy. May cause miscarriage or fetal abnormalities such as microcephaly, hydrocephalus, cerebral calcifications, cerebral palsy, epilepsy choroidoretinitis and thrombocytopenia.
patient should be started on spiramycin and the option of amniocentesis for fetal diagnosis at 16 weeks discussed.
Are beta blockers safe in pregnancy?
Yes. Commonly used and benefits generally outweigh the risks. But potential risk of growth restriction there growth scans are advised.
