Ante & Postnatal Screening Flashcards
Antenatal screening is used to
identify the risk of a disorder (so that further tests can be offered)
Dating scans determine the
pregnancy stage and due date
Anomaly scans can detect
serious physical abnormalities in the fetus
Blood and Urine tests are carried out throughout pregnancy to
monitor the concentration of marker chemicals
Amniocentesis and CVS are forms of
diagnostic testing
Amniocentesis and CVS both involve cell samples being cultured so that a
karyotype can be produced (to help diagnose a range of conditions)
CVS can be carried out earlier in pregnancy (than amniocentesis) but carries a higher risk of
miscarriage
PKU can be diagnised by
Postnatal screening tests
PKU is caused by a
substitution mutation
