What is the ‘Treaty of Antarctica’?
A
- It has been in force since 1961. Nearly 50 countries are signed up to protect Antarctica from mining, drilling for oil, pollution and war.

- With it being signed up till 2048, countries now want to discuss ways to regulate tourism

A
- The IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) which was set up in 1991.

What does the IAATO have?
A
- Guidelines on thins like the number of people allowed on shore, activities and wildlife watching.

What did the British Government suggest to other countries who signed the treaty?
A
- That a new agreement covering tourism to Antarctica was needed.

Why was this suggested by the British Government?
A
- As it would limit the number of tourists and where they could go, plus also ban any hotel building
