Antacids, prokinetics, histamine antagonist Flashcards
What happens if you chronically use antacids
SE: chronic use = sm intestine bacterial overgrowth, alkaline urine
How particulate antacids work?
↑gastric volume, may not ↑gastric pH, foreign body reaction if aspirated
How non-particulate antacids work
more complete mixing, reliable ↑gastric pH, 15-30 ml 15-30 min prior
● MOA: neutralizes acid from gastric contents
● Contraindications: renal dz
Mg = laxative; Al = ↓Ph, ↓Mg, ↑Ca; Ca = ↓Ph, ↑Ca, acid rebound, constipation, gas, met
acid, milk alkali syndrome (↑Ca, ↑BUN/Cr, alkalosis)
Prokenetic MOA
MOA: inhibits dopamine, works on 5HT3 receptors = enhances peristaltic contractions & accelerates
gastric emptying
Pro kinetic S/E
SE: Inhibits cholinesterase, HoTN, bradycardia, dysrhythmias, akathisias, sedation
