Look For: black head and neck, white chine, light brown body, chest is white and light brown

Wood Duck

Wood Duck Specimen
Look For: tear drop shaped head, female head is grey male head is black (supposed to be green), white chin, white chest, neck is brown with white dots
Wood Duck Non-Specimen
Look For: green head with white lines, white wing stripe, wings are a iridescent blue, chest is brown speckled white, belly is white or grey, females have a tear drop white eye
Mallard

Look For: head appears black, white ring around neck, yellow feet, brown neck into grey belly, yellow bill, female is light brown speckled with dark brown

Ring-Necked Duck Specimen
Look For: ruddy red ring around neck, two white bands across bill, black back, white body, chest is black
Ring-Necked Duck Non-Specimen
Look For: two white bands around bill, black head and back, white chest and lateral, high peak behind head, not noticeable but red ring around neck
Green-Winged Teal

Green-Winged Teal Specimen
Look For: head appears black and ruddy, bill is black, back looks grey and black like static tv, wings are black to dark grey, belly is dirty white, chest is dirty white with black dots, chin is black, black stripe on wing
Green-Winged Teal Non-Specimen
Look For: smaller than a mallard, green eyeshadow that reaches the back of the neck, black and white line ended eye, rest of head is ruddy, most of body is grey and looks like an old static tv screen, white stripe on wing, white and black rump, black bill, obnoxiously green stripe on wing

Blue-Winged Teal Specimen
Look For: body is brown with dark brown dots, male has a white stripe in front of eye female does not, small section of wing is powder blue and another is green, some white on wing too, black bill, yellow feet
Blue-Winged Teal Non-Specimen
Look For: black bill, pale powder blue top part of wing then white then a green, white stripe in front of eye, rest of the head is grey, body is a tan brown color with dark brown dots

Northern Shoveler Specimen
Look For: black appearing head, some white and brown on back, presumably white chest, ruddy lateral, blue on wings like teal but if two different places, female is dirty white and brown and ruddy with a speckled chin, bill is long and skinny at the base and wide at the end
Northern Shoveler Non-Specimen
Look For: iridescent green head with some black, ruddy lateral, white neck and chest, some black on back, yellow eye, long bill, wings have some blue and green

Look For: ruddy red head, black neck and chest, white back with tv signal lines or canvas looking back, dark tail, forehead slopes into the beak
Canvasback Non-Specimen
Look For: brown is red head, black chest, black bill, red eye, stark white back, tail is black, head is sloped into beack
Red Head Specimen
Look For: ruddy head, dark brown neck and shoulders, grey back with tv signal markings, tail blends from back, white belly, base of beak is a grey color with the tip black, also the beak has a lighter stripe, head is more rounded and there is a disconnect from head and beak, back is darker than canvasback
Red Head Non-Specimen
Look For: orangeish red head, chest is black, back is grey, tail is black, eye is yellow, beak is lighter at the base with white stripe and then a black stripe at the tip, the head is rounder
Hooded Merganser Specimen
Look For: long slender head mostly black with a white stripe, lateral is brown, belly is white, shoulder area has black stripes coming down, back is black, wings are black with some white
Hooded Merganser Non-Specimen
Look For: big black and white hood when engaged, black and white hood is slicked back past head when not, head is mostly black, eye is yellow, beak is black, back is black, lateral is brown, chest is mostly white with a black stripe around where shoulders would come down
Common Merganser Specimen
Look For: black head (supposed to be green), white neck, chest white, back wings are black, dorsal near tail is grey speckled
Common Merganser Non-Specimen
Look For: greenish black head (structural color), red beack, black back wings, rest of body is white, tail is black
Ruddy Duck Specimen
Look For: black tipped beak with yellow is base, white cheek, black head, neck is brownish, back is white and brown looks like painting with dry canvas, tail is black

Look For: head is black except for white cheeks and chin, beak is blue, back is ruddy red color, chest is a darker color, tail feathers black

Look For: dark brown back, lateral is brown and white mottled, ventral is light brown, head is greyish brown with the crown a little darker, bill is yellow with a black stripe down the middle
Pie-Billed Grebe Non-Specimen
Look For: dark brown to black back, head is brown, white eyeliner around eye, bill is white with black stripe down the middle, black chin
Horned Grebe Specimen
Look For: not in breeding plumage, white cheeks, black head, dark brown back, white belly, long neck, feet on back of body, bill is yellow with blackish tip

Look For: black crown with white cheeks and chin, back is black, lateral is white and grey mottled, belly is white, eye is red,
Double-Crested Cormorant Specimen
Look For: hooked bill, brown body, legs and tail dark brown, total beak is yellow, long neck folded around body

Look For: black body, wings are dark brown, blue eye, bright orange based bill, long snake like neck
American Bittern Specimen
Look For: tv static brown wings, long neck, long brown legs, black malar stripe with feathers pointing out like Danny Devito hair, white and brown neck, long sharp bill, under wings are dark brown

Look For: chest and neck is white and brown striped, head is brown with a white supercillum, back is brown
