ANS Flashcards
Define Autonomic Nervous system and Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic Nervous System: a functional division of the nervous system that is not voluntarily controlled
- Somatic Nervous System: a functional division of the nervous system that is voluntarily controlled
Define:
- Sympathetic Nervous system
- Sympathomimetics
- Sympatholytics
- Parasympathetic Nervous system
- Parasympathomimetics
- Parasympatholytics
- Sympathetic Nervous System: the branch of the autonomic nervous system that opposes physiological effects of the parasympathetic division
- Sympathomimetic: sympathetic agonist
- Sympatholytic: sympathetic antagonist
- Parasympathetic Nervous System: the branch of the autonomic nervous system that opposes physiological effects of the sympathetic division
- Parasympathomimetic: parasympathetic agonist
- Parasympatholytic: parasympathetic antagonist
What are catecholamines
Catecholamines: biogenic amines derived from tyramine including
dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine; produced from tyrosine in the adrenal medulla and postganglionic fibers of the sympathetic nervous system
Define:
- Myosis
- Mydriasis
- Cycloplegia
- Miosis: pupillary constriction
- Mydriasis: pupillary dilation
- Cycloplegia: paralysis of the ciliary body musculature responsible for accommodation
Autonomic nervous system
- Deals primarily with control and integration of visceral functions necessary for life support:
- Cardiac output
- Blood flow and distribution
- Digestion
• Evidence strongly suggests that the ANS, particularly at the level
of the vagal nerve, influences immune function and some CNS
activities such as seizure regulation
FIGHT & FLIGHT
• Regulated by the sympathetic or adrenergic branch of the
autonomic nervous system
• REST & DIGEST
• Regulated by the parasympathetic or cholinergic branch of the
autonomic nervous system
