Q

What variables does ANOVA involves?

A

One-way ANOVA involves:
One independent variable (referred to as a factor) which has a number of different levels
These levels correspond to the different groups or conditions
One continious dependent variable

Q

What can be an example of independent and dependent variables in the one-way ANOVA-test?

A

Comparing the effectiveness of three different teaching styles on student math scores. Than you will have one factor (independent variable) - teaching style, with three different levels (e.g. whole class, small group activities, self-paced computer activities)
The dependent variable is a continious variable (in this case, scores on a math test)

Q

Why is it called ANOVA?

A

Because it compares the variance (variability in scores) between different groups with the variability within each groups

Q

What does a large F Ratio indicate?

A

A large F Ratio indicates that there is more variability between the groups than there is within each group

Q

When should we use “One-way ANOVA between groups”?

A

Used when you have one dependent variable (grouping) with three or more levels (groups) and one continous variable

Q

What do we need when using one-way between groups ANOVA?

A
  1. One categorical independent variable with three or more distinct categories. This can also be a continous variable that has been recoded to give three equal groups (e.g. age groups: participant divided into three age categories, 29 and younger, between 30 and 44, 45 or above)
  2. One continous dependent variable
    (e. g. optimism scores)

Q

What does the One-way ANOVA.-between-groups test?

A

Tell you whether there are sigificant differences in the meanscores on the dependent variable across the three groups.
Post-hoc-test can than be used to fin out where these differences lie

Q

What does the one-way repeated measures ANOVA tests?

A

This techniques will tell you if there is a significant difference somewhere among the three sets of scores (e.g. time 1, time 2, time 3)
