Ageratum houstonianum (A. mexicatum)
Ageratum, Floss Flower
well in both sun and part-shade. Size varies based on variety but it’s most commonly found as a low-lying mounding plant growing about 6” tall and wide. Some varieties are used in cutting gardens and can reach heights of 30” and spread to about 20” wide. Leaves are heart-shaped, pubescent and opposite. Small button-like flower buds open to reveal long thread like petals giving the blooms a fluffy appearance. Flower colors include blue, purple, pink and white. Argeratum are dependable and prolific bloomers from May to fall frosts
Ageratums prefer moist, well-drained fertile soil. They prefer full sun but in locations where summers can be hot and dry, part shade is recommended.
Most commonly used as a border or bedding plant in gardens but taller varieties are becoming popular in cutting gardens. Also used in container plantings to fill empty spaces.
