Alliteration?
when words that start with same letter or sound are repeated
EXAMPLE: “Bella read a book by the babbling brook”
Allusion?
A brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or fictitious, or to a work of art. The author relies on the reader’s familiarity
EXAMPLE: “You’re acting like such a Scrooge!” – making a reference to Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ tale “A Christmas Carol”
Hyperbole?
exaggeration used for emphasis.
EXAMPLE: “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”
Imagery?
Visually descriptive or figurative language. Creates an image in the reader’s head. Appeals to the 5 senses.
Incongruity?
Something which is very different from everything around it
EXAMPLE: a wealthy woman who drives an old beaten up car.
Irony?
A figure of speech in which your expectations and the result do not match up.
EXAMPLE: a snowy day on the first day of spring.
metaphor?
involves figurative comparisons. Seeing a likeness between two things that are not of the same kind. (without “like” or “as”)
EXAMPLE: “School is a dungeon”
personification?
A figure of speech in which an inanimate object, animal or idea is endowed with human qualities or abilities.
EXAMPLE: “The sun kissed the flowers”
reliable?
A character or author whose thoughts and opinions can be trusted.
repetition?
Including a word or phrase more than once for emphasis.
EXAMPLE: “I have a dream…I have a dream…I have a dream…”
rhetorical question?
a question not meant to be answered. It is meant to get the reader thinking.
simile?
A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind using the words “like” or “as”
EXAMPLE: “School is LIKE a dungeon”
sarcasm?
the use of irony to mock or convey contempt
EXAMPLE: a waiter spills water on a customer. The customer rolls his/her eyes and replies with, “Thanks for the water!”
symbol?
a word or object that stands for another word or object.
EXAMPLE: dove = peace
tone?
The attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience conveyed through word choice and the style of the writing.
EXAMPLE: humorous (funny)
