The discharge of sewage is prohibited except;

• When the ship is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage with a system approved by the administration, the ship must be more than 3 miles from the nearest land.
• The ship may discharge sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected when she is more than 12 miles from the nearest land.
• The sewage must be discharged at a moderate rate when the ship is proceeding en route at a speed of at least 4 knots.
• The ship must have in operation an approved sewage treatment plant.
• The effluent must not produce visible floating solids, or cause discolouration of the surrounding water.
