Annelida Flashcards
Question: What is metamerism in Annelids?
Answer: Metamerism is the division of the body into a linear series of similar parts called metameres. Each metamere is separated by a transverse septum, acts as a hydrostatic skeleton, and contains longitudinal and circular muscles. Setae (chitinous bristles) are usually present on each segment for anchorage.
Question: What are the advantages of metamerism?
Answer: Metamerism allows for increased burrowing efficiency, a more sophisticated nervous system, and provides a safety factor by repeating key organ systems in each segment.
Question: Describe the nervous system of Annelids.
Answer: Annelids have a brain connected to a pair of ventral longitudinal nerve cords, with a ganglion in each segment.
Question: How does the circulatory system function in Annelids?
Answer: Annelids have a closed circulatory system where blood is enclosed within vessels that run the length of the body, with several hearts (5 in earthworms) pumping the blood through this system.
