What is Morton’s neuroma?
Condition where nerves in foot are damaged
ball of your foot, usually area between 3rd and 4th toes
Describe the symptoms of Morton’s neuroma
Shooting stabbing or burning pain
Feeling like there’s a stone under your foot
How is Morton’s neuroma managed?
Usually conservatively first; ice, elevation, ibuprofen/paracetamol, insoles, weight loss if overweight
Painkiller injections, radiofrequency ablation, foot surgery
Describe plantar fasciitis
Condition where there is pain around heel and arch of foot
What makes plantar fasciitis more likely?
Pain worse when you start walking after sleeping/resting
Pain feels better during exercise but worse after resting
difficult to raise your toes off floor
How long does achilles tendinopathy take to heal?
Roughly 12 weeks
Can use ice and paracetamol to ease symptoms
What is the Simmond’s triad?
Achilles tendon rupture symptoms
- altered angle of declination; afected foot more dorsiflexed when prone
- palpable gap
- lack of plantarflexion on calf squeeze test
What may patients describe if they have achilles tendon rupture?
A blow to the back of the lower leg whilst exercising
Audible snap
May still be able to walk on tiptoes and plantarflex against resistance
What are management options in achilles tendon rupture?
Non-surgical
- wearing a brace
- crutches to rest injured foot
- casting with foot plantarflexed
Surgical
- stitch tendon back together
What is a metatarsal stress fracture?
A fracture that has developed gradually as a result of repeated use of the foot in the same way
Treatment is through rest (off-loading), maintaining exercise (through non stressing activities)
What is lisfranc injury?
Where a patient has one or more metatarsals displaced from the tarsus
Treatment of lisfranc injury?
Walking boot/cast for 6-12 weeks
Physiotherapy
in some cases surgery may be required
