Ankle & Foot Flashcards
Gastrocnemius origin
Medial head: medial condyle and adjacent popliteal surface of the femur. Lateral head: lateral condyle of the femur.
Gastrocnemius insertion
Via the tendo calcaneus into the posterior surface of the calcaneus
Gastrocnemius nerve supply
Tibial n.S1, S2
Gastrocnemius function
Plantar flexion of the ankle, flexion of the knee
Soleus origin
Posterior surface of the head and proximal third of the body of the fibula, soleal line and middle third of the medial border of the tibia
Soleus insertion
Via the tendo calcaneus into the posterior surface of the calcaneus
Soleus nerve supply
Tibial n. S1, S2
Soleus function
Plantar flexion of the ankle
Tibialis anterior origin
Lateral condyle and upper 2/3 of the lateral surface of the body of the tibia, interosseous membrane, deep crural fascia
Tibialis anterior insertion
Base of the 1st MT, medial and plantar surfaces of the medial cuneiform bone
Tibialis anterior nerve supply
Deep peroneal n. L4, L5, S1
Tibialis anterior function
Dorsiflexion of the ankle, inversion of the foot at the subtalar and midtarsal joints
Peroneus longus origin
Head and upper 2/3 of the lateral surface of the fibula
Peroneus longus insertion
Base of the 1st MT, lateral aspect of the medial cuneiform
Peroneus longus nerve supply
Superficial peroneal n. L4, L5, S1
Peroneus longus function
Eversion of the foot at the subtalar jount, weak plantarflexion of the foot at the ankle
Peroneus brevis origin
Distal 2/3 of the lateral surface of the fibula
Peroneus brevis insertion
Tuberosity of the 5th MT
Peroneus brevis nerve supply
Superficial peroneal n. L4, L5, S1
Peroneus brevis function
Eversion of the foot at the subtalar jount, weak plantarflexion of the foot at the ankle
