Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) Flashcards
Known as the ankle to arm systolic pressure index and is the most common diagnostic test used in the non invasive physical examination of the suspect lower extremity
Ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI)
The arterial pressure measurement in the lower limb represents the single most important index for diagnosing what disease
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
In healthy individuals what is the ABPI that indicates the absence of organic disease
Between 0.97 and 1.1
When should an ABPI be performed
Any patient with diabetes , decreased pulses, foot ulcers, leg pain, all type 1 aged over 35 or with 20 or more years duration, alll type 2 aged 40 or older and history of occlusion due to organic disease, ulceration or ischemic pain
When is it recommended for a ABPI to be performed
Patient with diabetes, especially if they have decreased pulses, foot ulcers and femoral bruits
Patient with diabetes with leg pain of unknown etiology.
All type 1 diabetes mellitus patients over 35, or 20 or more years duration of diabetes
Patient with a history of occlusion due to organic disease, ulceration or ischemic pain
When you have less blood flow than you should to an area of your body is called
Ischemic
What is a complete or partial blockage of a blood vessel
Occlusion
What is a sound, especially an abnormal one, heard through a stethoscope
Bruits
What word describes the cause or causes of a disease
Etiology
An ABPI reading of what indicates healthy blood flow
1.0
An ABPI below what suggests PAD (peripheral arterial disease)
0.9
An ABPI of above what may indicate calcification of the artery walls, which also requires further evaluation
1.4
ABPI can be misleading due to what factors
Arterial calcification in individuals with diabetes can falsely appear elevated
Individuals with non-compressible arteries may underestimate the severity of PAD
Results within the context of a complete clinical assesment is crucial
