ANKLE Flashcards
Ankle Joint bone Articulations:
Tibia - distal (plafond) and medial malleolus. Fibula - lateral malleolus. Talus - trochlear surface (dome) with tibial plafond.
Ankle Joint Capsule attachments:
Above the medial & lateral malleoli to the posterior & lateral surfaces of the talus and the neck of the talus anteriorly. Weak anteriorly and posteriorly but strengthened medially and laterally by ligaments.
Ankle joint Supporting ligaments (extracapsular):
Medial collateral Deltoid) - from medial malleolus fanning out to attach to the navicular talus and calcaneous. Lateral collateral - from the lateral malleolus in 3 bands: Anterior talofibular (ATFL) Calcaneofibular and Posterior talofibular
What is an Anterior Tala-fibular sprain?
Explain
What is a common 5th metatarsal pathology where something appears to pull away from the bone
Avulsion fracture of 5th metatarsal styloid. Appears as a separate piece of bone that has a jagged edge where it has broken away. Not to be confused with a secondary ossification centre.
Where is a Jones fracture and what is the pattern?
Fracture at base of 5th metatarsal 1.5cm distal to tuberosity. Extends into 4th-5th intermetatarsal facet
Eversion injury to ankle involving the tibia and fibula
Trimalleolar fracture. Describe type and pattern of fracture
Describe medial heel pain (plantar fasciitis):
Explain
