Anitomical Terminology Flashcards
Anatomical Terminology
- Internationally set of agreed rules (Landmarks ect.) to provide -Orientation when describing human anatomy and - to distinguish different movements of the human body.
Terminologia Anatomica (TA)
Is the international standard on human anatomic terminology.
-Was released in 1999 in Latin and English
Anatomical Position
Standing, looking forward, feet together and pointing forward, with palms facings forward and thumbs away from the body.
Left or Right in reference to who?
the subjects perspective.
Cranial skeleton anatomy
Refers to the skill
Post cranial anatomy or infracranial
Refers to the skeleton minus the cranium
The axial skeleton
the torso and the head
appendicular skeleton
The limbs
Sagittal plane
divides body in left and right
Coronal plane
Divides body in anterior and posterior
Transverse plane
divides body in interior and superior
3d terms - Cranial
Towards the head (or superior)
3d terms - Caudal
Towards the tail (or inferior - opposite of cranial)
Superior
Towards the supper cranium end of a feature
Inferior
Towards the lower (caudal) end of a feature (superior)
Anterior
Towards the front
Posterior
Towards the back
Medial
Towards the mid plane
Lateral
Away from the mid-plane
Ventral
Towards the front surface of a feature
Dorsal
Towards the back of a feature
Proximal
Nearest the axial skeleton
Distal
Furthest from the axial skeleton
Palmar
Towards the palm
Plantar
Towards the sole
Volar
Towards the palm or sole
Superficial
Nearest the surface of the body
Deep
Opposite to superficial, further to the body surface
How do you describe two different variables? Give an example.
The terms are combined. E.g. Antero-lateral
External
Outer surface of a bone
Internal
Inside a bone
Endocranial
Inner surface of the cranial vault
Ectocranial
Outer surface of the cranial vault
Flexion
Bending movement that decreases an angle between body parts
Extension
a straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts
Abduction
Movement of a body part, away from the sagittal plane
Adduction
Movement of a body part towards the sagittal plane
Pronation
Movement of the forearm that rotates the palm facing anteriorly (thumb lateral) to posteriorly (thumb medial)
Supination
Movement that rotates the palm from posteriorly to anteriorly
Circumduction
Combination of abduction, adduction, flexion and extension, that results in limb move in a cone-shaped path
Rotation
Combination of supination and pronation, that results in limb moving on its own axis (i.e. shoulder “twist” w/ straight arm)
Dorsiflexion
Flexion of the feet away from the ground
Plantarflexion (volarflexion)
Flexion of the foot interiorly towards the ground
Eversion
Turning the sole of the foot outwards (laterally )
Inversion
Turning the sole of the foot inwards (medially)
protrusion
anterior movement of an object (i.e. jaw)
Retrusion
posterior movement of an object (I.e. jaw)
Opposition
Motion in which body parts are brought together
Articulation
Area of bone contact
Condyle
Rounded articulation (or articular process)
Epicondyle
nonarticular projection adjacent to condyle
Facet
Small articulation (or articular surface)
Head
Large, round, usually articular end of a bone
Shaft or diaphysis
Long, straight and tubular section of long bones
Epiphysis
End portions of a long bone (expand into an articulation
Body
Shaft or central portion of irregular bones
Neck
Area between head and shaft
process
Bony prominence
Eminence
Bony projection (not as prominent as process)
spine
Long, thin and sharp projection
Tuberosity
Large, usually roughened eminence (tendon or ligament attachment)
Tubercle
Small, usually roughened eminence (tendon or ligament attachment )
Trochanter
Large prominent and blunt process found in the femur
Malleolus
Rounded protuberance adjacent to the ankle joint
Torus
a bony thickening
Ridge
Linear bony elevation, often roughened
Crest
Prominent, usually sharp ridge of bone
Line
Raised surface, not as prominent as ridge or torus, or as sharp as crest
Fossa
Broad and shallow depressed area
Fovea
Pit-like depressed area
Groove
Linear pit or furrow
Sulcus
Long and wide groove
fontanelle
space between cranial bones of an infant
Suture
articulation between cranial bones
Foramen
Opening through a bone
Canal
Wide and tunnel like foramen
Meatus
Short canal
Sinus
Cavity within a cranial bone
alveolus
