Anisometropia Flashcards
What is anisometropia?
The >1D difference in refractive error between both eyes
What is aniseikonia?
The difference in the size or shape between the image seen in each eye
What is anisocoria?
The difference in pupil size between both eyes
What two types of anisometropia are there?
Axial and refractive.
Spherical disparity due to axial length difference
Cylindrical disparity due to corneal power differences
What can anisometropia result in?
Difference in retinal images sizes, reduced binocularity and amblyopia
What management options are there for anisometropia?
Spectacles, contact lenes, lens replacement or lens removal surgery
What can you do to spectacles for anisometropia to make them function better and look better?
decrease back vertex distance
flatten the base curve
decrease the thickness of the lenses
choose a smaller frame (shallower)
smaller eye frame size = smaller vertex distance
larger blank size
Why prescribe spectacles to someone with axial anisometropia?
People with axial anisometropia require a lens placed in the anterior focal plane of the eye
Why prescribe contact lenses to someone with refractive anisometropia?
People with refractive anisometropia require a lens placed as close as possible to the nodal point of the eye
