Animation Flashcards
The basic definition of animation
ANIMATION is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork to create the optical illusion of movement.
Animation allows for the movement of a graphic that is the result of still images placed together in a sequence and run over time.
Cel-animation (2d animation)
-used in cartoon or animated movies
-each scene is drawn by hand
- layered hand-drawn images are used allow a “depth of field” and allow for the illusion of movement
Advantages: Ideal for detailed internal movement of an object, in comparison to other animation processes
Path based animation (2d animation)
Path-Based Animation is the process in which a line is drawn for an image to follow during an animation
Stopmotion/Claymation (we already know…)
Stopmotion animation is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on it’s own. This is done through the movement of small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement.
Often, clay figures (claymation) are used because of their ease of repositioning.
Tweening [REMEMBER: IN BETWEENING] (2d)
Tweening is the process of computer generated frames between two images to create “smoother” movement
ADVANTAGES:
Rotoscoping (2d)
Tracing an object every single frame in a video
Ideal for animation with a background that can be imported
Morphing (2d)
Morphing is a special effect in animations that changes one image into another through a seamless transition.
Behavioural animation
Utilises mathematical coding to have an autonomous character determine its own actions, to a certain extent
Make reactions of characters more believable
Frame rates (in detail)
Higher the frame rate, the smoother the video playback appears to the viewer. A lower frame rate may appear to look choppy and slow.
Usually, film uses 24 frames per second.
Animation uses 12 frames per second
Looping
A loop (or an animation cycle) is the repetition of an amount of frames to save the animator from redrawing every frame
8 fps => Minimum Requirement for Illusion of Movement
Example => Walk Cycle
3D ANIMATION
3-D animations are digitally modelled and manipulated by an animator.
Modelling (3d)
3-D models are created by manipulating polygon meshes and moulding them into objects, characters and scenes.
Wireframe (3d)
is a visual presentation of a three dimensional or physical object used in 3D computer graphics. It is created by specifying each edge of the physical object where two mathematically continuous smooth surfaces meet, or by connecting an object’s constituent vertices using straight lines or curves
Rendering
is the process of generating an image from a model, by means of computer programs. The model is a description of 3-D objects containing geometry, viewpoint, texture, lighting, and shading information
Warping
Image warping is the process of digitally manipulating an images such that any shapes portrayed in the image have been significantly distorted. Can also be applied to video.
