Animals, Plant, Mitosis Vocabulary Flashcards
Nucleus
The nucleus controls and regulates the activities of the cell, and carries the genetic information.
Nucleolus
The part of a eukaryotic cell where ribosomes are made. It is made up of dense RNA and proteins.
Chromosomes
Chromosomes are thread-like strands that contain hundreds, or even thousands, of genes. A chromosome is made up of proteins and DNA organized into genes. Each cell normally contains 23 pairs of chromosomes.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a watery, gel-like substance that fills the inside of a cell
Mitochondria
Turns glucose (sugar) into energy.
Lysosomes
Break down materials ( such as food particles and waste).
Ribosomes
A small organelle involved in the process of making protein, which is called protein synthesis.
Centrioles
The centrioles are found in pairs and move towards the poles (opposite ends) of the nucleus when it is time for cell division.
Golgi Apparatus
proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destinations
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The endoplasmic reticulum is a collection of tubes that make, package, and transport proteins and fats.
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane it the outer cover that regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell. It is the wrapping, or covering of the cell.
Vacuoles
Vacuoles store nutrients (food)/water or any variety of nutrients a cell might need to survive
Cell Wall
A cell wall is a strong, protective structure that surrounds a plant cell.
Mitosis
Mitosis: As you get older, your cells divide and make new copies of itself. Mitosis is the duplication of its cell, and all of its parts, which takes place in the nucleus. The nucleus divides into two identical nuclei.
Chromosome
Chromosome: The cell makes sure that the offspring cell has the same set of chromosomes as the parent cell. Chromosomes are two DNA molecules,or genetic material, held together by the centromere.
