Animals Equal Rights Flashcards
Speciesism - Peter Singer
Typically humans show speciesism when they give less interest of non human animals than they give to the similar interests of humans. It is an attitude of bias against a being because of the species it belongs to - exploitation of animals
PETA
Animals have an inherit worth, a value completely separate from their abilities and intelligence compared to humans, they believe every creature has a right to live a suffering free life e.g. PETA persuaded sea world to end its orca whale breeding process
Argument against PETA
Animals don’t have the same intelligence or capacity for social contracts as humans and cannot make moral choices
Welfare Act 2006
Biggest change in 100 years making cruelty against the law and makes them responsible, penalties include £20000 fine, prison or banned from owning animals e.g. After the first year offences for dogs were down 15.6%
