Animals Flashcards
Baby blue herons look almost exactly like dinosaurs
Kangaroo vs Wallabies - Kangaroos are much larger than wallabies and can grow as tall as 2metres and weight over 90kg. Wallabies, on the other hand, are lucky to weigh more than 20kg and rarely reach heights of 1m
Hunting success rates for animals
Carnivores - 20-30% (african wild dogs can go up 60%)
Birds like hawks and eagles - 20+%
Dragon flies - almost 100% - because of the way they can fly. They can fly in all 6 directions. Top, bottom, left right and forward and backward (yes, they can fly backwards (like humming birds))
Penguins live in Namibia. They are african penguins
Geckos don’t drink water. They lock their eyes because that’s where all the moisture collects.
When did sharks first appear? The earliest fossil evidence for sharks or their ancestors are a few scales dating to 450 million years ago, during the Late Ordovician Period. Sharks existed before trees. The first trees (big plants [30 meters] with woody stems) evolved about 360 million years ago and had roots and leafs (begin carboniferous). Amongst these first trees were lycopods, now species from this group are only known as small mosses (Selaginella or spike moss).
Limestones can be formed with the help of living organisms (generally). Ocean-dwelling organisms such as oysters, clams, mussels and coral use calcium carbonate (CaCO3) found in seawater to create their shells and bones. Once these animals die, the water pressure compacts the organisms creating limestone.
Hippos are herbivores, and still, kill almost anything that is stupid enough to go near them. These psychotic savages have one of the strongest bite forces at 1800Psi and can run at IMPOSSIBLE SPEEDS, up to 30 miles/h while weighing on average, 3,500 to 9,920 pounds. When he doesn’t simply trample his victims, he basically cut them in half with that gigantic hydraulic press of a mouth. All that is just for fun. Not to eat.
Vultures have extremely powerful stomach acid, as well as very strong immune systems. This allows them to eat meat contaminated with diseases like anthrax and rabies without getting sick, and in fact, their bodies effectively kill the pathogens. That’s why they’re much more efficient scavengers than animals like rats or dogs, which will spread the pathogens, and why vultures are so beneficial to humans. They inhibit the spread of many diseases, as well as cleaning up carcasses, which can prevent contamination of water supplies.
