Animal Welfare Assessments (5) Flashcards
Dr. Banach
What is eustress?
stress that is not unpleasant, necessarily
animal’s willingness to tolerate the stressor
What is distress?
aversive, negative state in which coping and adaptation processes fail to return an organism to physiological and/or psychological homeostasis
What are the purposes of welfare assessment programs?
- helps stakeholders measure how they compare to set standards
- provide direction on how improve welfare
- reassure the public that animals are receiving good care and that facilities are complying
What are parameters used in welfare assessment programs?
stockperson/animal caretaker, environment, animal
leads to health and production, physiology, and behavior
What are output-based parameters of assessment protocols?
health an production, physiology, behavior
How should you assess output-based parameters - health and production?
- frequency/severity of illness or production issues at the individual vs herd level
- veterinary medical and production records
How should you assess output-based parameters - stress response?
How should you assess output-based parameters - physiology?
What are issues with measuring physiological parameters?
normal handling = stress
How should you assess output-based parameters - behavior?
may reveal information about the nature of the stimulus and the animal’s coping strategy
What is pain?
unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual tissue damage and described in terms of such damage
How is behavior used as a measurement of well-being?
What is the qualitative behavioral assessment?
uses a range of positive and negative qualitative terms
What is farm animal welfare?
How should you assess during on farm visits?
