Animal Tissues Flashcards
What are the four types of animal tissue?
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous.
Made of thin cells, and covers the body, organs, blood vessels & all body cavities.
Epithelial tissue.
What are the two classification of layers of epithelial tissues?
Simple and stratified.
What are the three shapes of individual cells in epithelial tissues?
Squamous, cuboidal, and columnar.
What is the shape of secretory epithelial tissue?
Cuboidal.
What is the layer number and shape of absorptive epithelial tissue?
Simple columnar
What is the layer number and shape of gas exchange epithelial tissue?
Simple squamous.
What is the layer number and shape of epithelial tissue that are mostly for protection?
stratified squamous.
Composed of cells that vary widely in form and function, also supports the body and forms the structure.
Connective tissue.
What is an extracellular matrix?
Protein fibers & ground substance that surround support and give structure to cells and tissues.
What function does the loose/areolar connective tissue serve?
Holds organs in place and acts as packing material.
Mainly made up of collagen fibers and is a dense connective tissue.
Fibrous
What function does the fibrous serve?
Acts as a shock absorber and provides resistance to stretching and strength.
Specialized loose connective tissue.
Adipose
What function does the adipose serve?
Facilitates energy storage and provides padding and insulation
Hardest connective tissue.
Bone
What function does the bone serve?
Provides protection, strength, and support.
Composed of collagen fiber embedded in rubbery protein-carbohydrate complex
Cartilage
What function does the cartilage serve?
Reduces friction between bones and provides structure, support, and strength
Composed of cells that possesses contractile filaments that change the size of cells.
Muscle tissues.
Striated; attached to bones by tendons.
Skeletal.
What function does the skeletal muscle serve?
Responsible for voluntary movements that allow you to move your body.
This lacks striations.
Smooth muscle.
What function does the smooth muscle serve?
Responsible for involuntary movements like the passage of blood.
Striated and cells are connected by intercalated disks.
Cardiac tissue
What function does the cardiac tissue serve?
Responsible for the contractions of the heart.
