Animal Studies Flashcards
ImPrinting
An innate readiness to develop a strong bond with the mother/ first object seen
Takes place during specific time in development
Who studies goslings?
Lorenz
Lorenz study aim
Investigate the mechanisms of imprinting where the youngest follow and form an attachment to the first large moving object they meet
Lorenz procedure
Divided the goslings into 2 groups
1- left with mum to naturally hatch
2- hatched in an incubator with Lorenz being the first thing they saw
To test the effect of imprinting the goslings were marked to distinguish which group they were in
Findings of Lorenz study
The goslings quickly divided themselves up to folllw the first living object they saw
Lorenz goslings showed no recognition of their mother
Conclusions of Lorenz study
Goslings imprint on a persistently present object seen within the first 24hrs
Who studied monkeys?
Harlow
Aim of Harlows study
To demonstrate that mother love was not based on the feeding bond between mother and infant but its contact confort instead
Procedure of harlows study
IV a- soft cloth surrogate mum no food
IV b- wire surrogate mum with food
DV- time spent with surrogate mum
Observed for 165 days
Observed in response of a fearful event
Findings of harlows study
+18 hrs a day on a soft cloth
When frightened all monkeys clung to a cloth
Conclusions of harlows study
Infants do not develop an attachment to the caregiver who feeds them
They prefer contact comfort
