Animal Studies Flashcards
Lorenz procedures
Randomly split clutch of goose eggs
Half eggs to mother, half eggs to Lorenz
One half saw Lorenz first, the other half saw their mother first
Lorenz findings
The Goslings Imprinted on him and he found a critical period where the goslings had to form an attachment by or else they wouldn’t attach (a few hours)
What is sexual imprinting
The first thing that the animal sees moving at birth is what it will be sexually interested in at adulthood
Harlow procedures
Baby monkeys separated from their mothers and offered 2 surrogate mothers
A cloth mother without milk, and a wire mother with milk
Harlow Findings
The monkeys spent more time with the cloth mothers
Contact comfort matters more than milk
What did Harlow and Lorenz both conclude
There is a critical period
(Few hours and 90 days)
