Animal Studies Flashcards
Imprinting
Newly hatched goslings attach to the first moving object they see
Critical period
Imprinting must occur a few hours after birth
Lorenz study procedure
Lab experiment. Geese eggs randomly divided into two conditions.
1. Control group: hatched naturally
2. Incubated and imprinted on Lorenz
Lorenz study findings
Incubated group followed Lorenz everywhere even when the groups got mixed up
AO3 Lorenz
Lack of generalisability to humans
Harlow study procedure
Lab experiment - he reared 16 monkeys half with plain-wired mother with milk dispenser and the other half with cloth-wired mother with milk dispenser
Harlow study findings
Monkeys clung to cloth mother regardless as to which dispensed milk
Long term effects:
- More aggressive, unskilled in mating, neglected their offspring
AO3 Harlow study
