Animal studies Flashcards
Lorenz’s geese
Split batch of geese eggs
1) naturally hatched by mother
2) incubator w/ Lorenz as first moving object seen
1) followed mother
2) followed Lorenz -> later tried to mate with humans
Lorenz’s geese conclusion
Learning theory not true as imprinted before being fed
Lorenz generalisability
can’t generalise as very different species
Guiton (Lorenz AO3)
chicks imprinted yellow gloves + tried to mate w/ them but later learnt prefer to mate with other chickens
NOT PERMANENT
Harlow’s Monkeys
reared monkeys seperate to mothers and other monkeys
had 2 model mothers
1) wire + dispensed milk
2) cloth + soft + comforting
chose to spend time with cloth mother
food mother only when hungry
When threatened by a ‘monster’ they would go to cloth mother
only had cloth mother -> abnormal adult = aggressive + anti-social
only had wire mother -> dysfunctional adult
Harlow’s impact on learning theory
Learning theory not true as attach to cloth mother not feeding mother
Harlow ethics
Seperaction
many monkeys became dysfunctional adults
monkeys were highly distressed and torchered by scary looking robots
Harlow’s contribution to reasearch
effect of attachment on life
Harlow’s practical application
zoos + social workers
