Animal Responses Flashcards
Mammalian nervous system parts
Central Nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
Peripheral nervous system (the neurons that connect the CNS to the rest of the body)
Parts of the peripheral nervous system
Somatic nervous system (controls conscious activities)
Autonomic nervous system (controls unconscious activities)
The function of the cerebrum
Vision
Hearing
Learning
Thinking
The function of the hypothalamus
Controlling body temperature and producing hormones that control the pituitary gland
Function of medulla oblongata
Controlling breathing and heart rate
Function of the cerebellum
Muscle coordination
Posture
Balance
Function of the pituitary gland
Releasing hormones and stimulating other glands
Reflex action
A rapid involuntary response that doesn’t involve conscious parts of the brain and helps protect the body from damage
Reflex action
Stimulus ---- receptors -----(using sensory neurones) CNS (relay neurone in unconscious part of brain/ spinal cord)---. (using motor neurones) Effectors ----- Response
Blinking reflex
Stimulus: something touches your eye
Receptors: sensory nerve endings in the cornea detect the touch stimulus. A nerve impulse is sent along the sensory neurone to a relay neurone in the CNS
CNS: the impulse is then passed from the relay neurone to motor neurons
Effector: the motor neurons send impulses to the orbicularis oculi muscle that move your eyelids.
Response: these muscles contract causing your eyelids to close quickly and prevent your eye being damaged
Knee jerk reflex
Stimulus: your quadriceps muscle is stretched.
Receptors: stretch receptors in the quadriceps muscles detect the muscles being stretched. A nerve impulse is passed along a sensory neurone.
CNS: sensory neurone communicates directly with the motor neurone in the spinal cord (no relay neurone)
Effector: the motor neurone carries nerve impulses to the quadriceps muscles
Response: quadriceps muscles contract so the lower leg moves forward quickly.
