Animal Reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
Budding
A
Process by which new organisms split off from pre-existing organisms. Form of asexual reproduction.
Example: Hydra
2
Q
Fragmentation and Regeneration
A
The process by which a pre-existing organism breaks into parts that regenerate into new organism. Form of asexual reproduction.
Examples: sponges, planaria, starfish
3
Q
Parthenogenesis
A
The process by which an egg develops without being fertilized. The resulting adult is haploid. Form of asexual reproduction.
Examples: Honeybees and whiptail lizards
4
Q
Advantages of Asexual Reproduction
A
- enables animals living in isolation to reproduce without a mate
- generation of offspring is quick
- no expenditure of energy-maintaining reproductive systems or hormonal cycles
- offsprings are identical clones of the parent, this is advantageous when the environment is stable
5
Q
Asexual Reproduction
A
Produces offspring genetically identical to the parent. Three types of asexual reproduction are:
- Budding
- Fragmentation and Regeneration
- Parthenogenesis
