Animal/plant Cell Flashcards
a form of a eukaryotic cell that is distinct from plant cells in that it does not have a rigid cell wall.
Animal cell
eukaryotic cells, which have a true nucleus along with specialized structures called organelles that carry out different functions. Plant cells have special organelles called chloroplasts, which create sugars via photosynthesis, and a cell wall that provides structural support.
Plant cell
a tiny structure within a cell that performs a specific function for that cell.
Organelle
The boundary that surrounds a cell and controls which substances can enter or leave the cell.
Cell membrane
a stiff structure that surrounds and protects a cell; found in plant, fungus, and some bacteria cells.
Cell wall
the liquid in the inside of a living cell.
Cytoplasm
an organelle in eukaryotic cells that is the site of cellular respiration and generates most of the cell’s ATP.
Mitochondria
organelle in eukaryotic organisms that transports molecules from the endoplasmic reticulum to their destination.
Golgi body/Apparatus
is a large organelle made of membranous sheets and tubules that begin near the nucleus and extend across the cell. Itcreates, packages, and secretes many of the products created by a cell. Ribosomes, which create proteins, line a portion of this.
Endoplasmic reticulum
function is in any cell is to produce proteins.
Ribosome
an organelle in a plant cell that turns energy from the sun into chemical energy for the plant to use.
Chloroplast
a tiny cavity in the cytoplasm of a cell containing air, liquids, food, and waste products.
Vacuole
an organelle in a cell that holds the cell’s DNA (plural: nuclei; related term: nucleic acid).
Cell Nucleus
also called the nuclear envelope, is a double membrane layer that separates the contents of the nucleus from the rest of the cell; found in both animal and plant cells.
Nuclear Membrane
found in the nucleus of a cell, a long nucleic acid molecule containing the genetic instructions for the development and functioning of all living organisms; abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid.
