Animal Physiology Flashcards
8 Components of the Male Reproductive System
- Vas deferens
- Prostate gland
- Urethra
- Erectile muscle/ penis
- Seminal muscle
- Epididymis
- 2 testes
- Scrotum
Vas Deferens
Carries sperm to the penis during ejaculation; the sperm duct
Prostate Gland
Adds alkaline fluids: neutralize vaginal acids. Prostate fluids nourish the sperm
Male Urethra
Delivers semen, fluid that contains and transports sperm during ejaculation. Urine during excretion
Erectile Muscle/ Penis
Muscles become erect to penetrate the vagina during sexual intercouse. Delivers sperm to the top of the vagina
Seminal Muscle
Adds nutrients (fructose sugar) for respiration. Provides sperm energy and motility. Majority of ejaculatory fluid. Adds mucus to protect sperm
Epididymis
Sperm matures and mobilizes here, stored awaiting ejaculation.
Testes
Testosterone and sperm production.
Scrotum
Protects and holds testes outside the body. Maintains lower optimum temperature for sperm production
