Animal Nutrition Flashcards
Adequate feeding of animals for the production of desired products
Animal Nutrition
An edible material that provides nutrition
Food
refers to food but more commonly is used to designate animal food
Feed
any material made into or used as food or feed, respectively
Foodstuff/feedstuff
Mixture of feedstuffs used to supply nutrients to an animal
Diet
Daily allocation of food (or feed)
Rations
How do we accomplish animal nutrition?
Know what parts of food are used by the animal
How do we determine what nutrients are needed?
Know what they need to live and what they need most to produce the desired product.
Pros of growth trials
Inexpensive, mimics real life, measurements are easy to take
Cons of growth trials
Need 12-15 animals, get accurate weight
Determine the proportion of the nutrients in a feed or diet that are absorbed by the GI tract
Digestion trials
Burn it and see what is left. Measures the mineral content
Ash
Variable but low value to use in monogastrics. Variable value in ruminates but is more utilized
Crude fiber
Very common. Sample is weighed, cooked until no water is left, and reweighed. Quick and easy. Downside is some volatile fatty acids may evaporate along with some oils.
Dry matter method
Uses nitrogen to determine the protein content.
Crude protein method
