animal migration midterm 1 Flashcards
How do we classify animals?
Binomial Nomenclature
Classification of animals hierarchy:
- species
- genus
- family
- order
- class
- phylum
- kingdom
- domain
Discovery Scientific method?
- observation
- collection of data
- measurement
- analysis of data
- repeatability
Hypothesis based science method?
- hypothesis generation
- predictions
- experiments using controls
- repeatability
Hypothesis Must:
- establish mutually exclusive alternative explanations for phenomena
- BE TESTABLE
- by tested emprically
The hypothetico-deductive method
- observe
- ask questions and propose answers
- derive predictions
- test predictions
3 key approaches:
- experimentation (hypothesis generation, testing)
- empiricism (measurement, observation)
- modelling (representations of ideas, structures or processes)
Definition of migration:
a journey with the clear purpose of moving from one region to another
Obligate Migration:
- species has to migrate
- predictable where and when they go
- FIXED
Facultative Migration:
- not able to predict where or when they go
- optional, more reactionary
- FLEXIBLE
irruptive movements:
-variable conditions causes occasional movement of large groups of species
Post breeding movements to exploit food
-moving after breeding to a spot that has more to eat
complete migration
-everyone leaves
partial migration
- some leave, some stay
- mostly older and males stay
Directly study migration:
-use of direct markers or tracking devices
indirectly study migration:
-intrinsic markers (stable isotopes, genetic markers)
mist netting
- 2 poles with mesh between them
- can be active (with traps) or passive (no traps)
